About the project

The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of the University of Rijeka launched, with the support of the European Social Fund, the project "Building a Support System for Young Researchers" in order to provide a ground for the mutual cooperation of young researchers from all of the constituents of the University and to increase their openness towards the public and business sector.

Statistics show a deficit of scientific literature published in relevant scientific journals and the insufficient international visibility of Croatian researchers. These two elements are linked since young researchers are forced to work on their own, without the perspective of an interdisciplinary collaborative approach, and thus produce insufficiently visible scientific results.

In addition, research shows great socialization obstacles in the work of young researchers, such as excessive work load, dependence on interpersonal factors in their research, deficiency of resources necessary for work, low degree of mobility and networking, as well as the aforementioned problem of closed research communities.

This project tries to solve these problems by building and supporting a practice of coworking among young researchers, i.e. by building a motivational environment where scientists can share their knowledge and skills acquired during their education and work experience. Working with people who share common scientific values would bring insights from scientific areas with which one might not be acquainted. This could be a turning point in the scientific development of a young researcher.

The coworking practice is managed by the newly founded Cooperation Office whose main purpose is to facilitate scientific cooperation with the goal of increasing scientific excellence and presenting scientific work to the general public through lectures and panel discussions.

Besides the Office, coworking will be facilitated through our Database which will include every young researcher from the University of Rijeka and present the basic info on his or hers scientific interests, work, and their contact information.

Another aim of the project is scientific research in the field of social philosophy of science. The results of this research will be used to reduce the aforementioned obstacles in the work of young researchers and to familiarize the general scientific community with the concepts and methods developed by the social philosophy of science.

The project is co-funded by the European Social Fund of the European Union as a part of the Operational Programme "Human Resources Development". The overall project budget amounts to 930.859,20 HRK, with a 100% funding from EU sources. Duration of the project: July 1 2015 – November 30 2016.
